Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today would be Theodor Seuss Geisel’s, aka Dr. Seuss, 103rd birthday.  To celebrate Enid at Knitting Memories has created an adorable Cat in the Hat.  Here is the link and I have included the pic of the cloth below:  http://knittingmemories.blogspot.com/2007/03/happy-birthday-cat.html .

Here are some interesting facts about Dr. Seuss:

 1.  He was married twice, but had no children.  He is quoted famously as saying “You have ’em, I’ll amuse em!”

2.  He won 3 Oscars – 2 for documentaries (Hitler Lives and Design for Death) and 1 for animation (Gerald McBoing-Boing).

3.  His inspiration of Green Eggs and Ham:  Bennett Cerf (founder and publisher of Random House) bet him that he couldn’t wrtie a book using just 50 words…the outcome?  Green Eggs and Ham is the only book that Geisel wrote that still made him laugh 25 years later.  By the way, Bennett never paid.

4.  It took him 9 months to write The Cat in the Hat book.  He was asked to do the book after Life magazine published excerpts of a panel’s report on why children don’t learn to read easily (apparently Dick and Jane were just to freakin’ boring!).   Geisel was given a list of 400 words and was told to pick only 220 to use as this was “the maximum that kids could absorb at one time”.
